Durham and Wearside Sands

Durham and Wearside Sands is a local branch of Sands, the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society,.and was formed to offer local support for bereaved parents and their families. The group is run on a completely voluntary basis and our simple aim is to offer support, understanding, comfort and most importantly, a listening ear.

The death of a baby is a devastating experience. The effects of grief can be overwhelming and parents, their families and friends can be left feeling dazed, disorientated, isolated and exhausted.

It can be hard to take in information, to make decisions or to imagine how you are going to cope. At Sands there are people who understand what it's like because many of us have been through this experience ourselves, and we are here to help offer support and information when you need it. We are not trained counsellors, just fellow parents that understand the sheer enormity of what has happened and hope we can help in some way either now or in the weeks or months to come. The subject of stillbirth and infant death is often thought to be taboo and it was thought that parents were best left alone. We believe that parents need an opportunity to express all of the emotions and feelings that result from the death of their child. We are there to offer support in the early hours and days as well as throughout the difficult journey that we are all travelling

With the added support and strength the group is now gaining we are hoping to also be able offer support information, advice and materials to medical professionals across the North-East.
